Julian Baker
Managing Director
BA Hons Arch, Dip Arch, ARB, RIBA
Julian is an award-winning architect with many acclaimed projects both in the UK and throughout Europe. As Managing Director, he is instrumental in setting the ethos of the Practice as well as it’s strategic aims and aspirations. This is founded on a strongly-held belief in the importance of teamwork over and above that of any one individual and the promotion of a equality, diversity and inclusivity throughout the Practice.
Julian joined Ellis Williams Architects in 1994, before becoming a Director in the late 90s and Managing Director in 2013. He has been instrumental in re-shaping the Practice to embrace today’s challenges, whether that be in respect of sustainability, social value or business, underpinning our efforts to deliver architecture that benefits society by putting people, places and the planet at the centre of everything we do.
His passion for promoting great design has been demonstrated both within Ellis Williams and in a much wider context. His projects have received numerous awards, including those at Lymm Water Tower, Newcastle & Stafford Colleges Group and the restoration and refurbishment of the iconic Odeon Luxe Leicester Square.
He has sat on numerous design panels and has been an active member of RIBA North-West for many years, as well as being a member of the RIBA Awards Panel. In 2021, Julian was also elected as a North West Regional Representative to the RIBA National Council.
Julian is also passionate about helping new generations of architects and has been a RIBA Student Mentor for many years. He has worked with a large number of students, many of whom have since joined the Practice and have been instrumental in delivering a number of our landmark schemes.
