About

Ellis Williams is a multi-award winning practice ranked in the top 100 members of the AJ100 (The Architects’ Journal) listing the UKs largest, most successful and innovative architecture practices in the UK.

Our work has taken us to some extraordinary places and positioned us in front of an international audience over the last half century. We enhance the built environment and user experience by putting places, people and the planet at the centre of everything we do.

Our tailored design process and collaborative approach allows us to create sustainable, innovative and responsive buildings that can adapt as future user’s needs evolve.

Social Value embedded in our business

To us, Social Value is about leaving a lasting positive legacy on society as part of every project we deliver.

Our Social Value Policy has been created by a desire ‘to do the right thing’ and to be a truly responsible business.  We are committed to delivering social impact through our work by going beyond the building and actively supporting communities, the environment and our charity partners.

We work with our partners to create bespoke plans that target our clients’ priority areas delivering meaningful and long term benefits through every stage of our projects.

Alongside our Social Value Policy we also run an Employee Volunteering Programme, a workplace initiative where we give every member of staff two volunteering days each year so that they can gift their time and talent to causes that they are passionate about.

Improving our impact on the Planet

Responding to one of the greatest ongoing challenges of our generation is the drive to true zero carbon. We recognise the responsibility architects have, we are at the forefront of driving change and delivering solutions for the transformation needed. Through our commitment to the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge and the UK Architects Declare Climate and Biodiversity Emergency we are advocating for clients to meet the LETI targets for embodied carbon and energy in use.

We have made significant investment in parametric environmental modelling programmes and software including One Click LCA, a one-stop carbon & life cycle metrics software that helps calculate and reduce environmental impacts of buildings. Our team includes sustainability specialists and Certified Passive House Designers bringing the latest knowledge and expertise in sustainable design and carbon reduction.

Restoring and Preserving

Over the past 50 years we have helped to re-imagine and rejuvenate a wide variety of historic buildings across the UK, delivering award-winning projects such as Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art (Gateshead), Storyhouse (Chester), Mostyn Gallery (Llandudno) and the redevelopment of Newport Market.

Our in-house RIBA Conservation Architects have extensive experience of working on a wide range of historic and listed buildings across the UK, including within Conservation Areas and World Heritage Sites, breathing new life into old buildings whilst respecting and celebrating their heritage. Our wide range of Grade I, Grade II* and Grade II Listed properties include theatres, town halls, public libraries, art galleries, warehouses and mills, school buildings, churches and cathedrals, market halls, pumphouses, water towers and art-deco cinemas.

Our team specialise in the sensitive restoration and redevelopment of these historic buildings and bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise in relation to overcoming the challenges and constraints of major listed building, restorations, refurbishments and conversions.
