Northwich Library Redevelopment

Breathing New Life into Northwich Library known as the Brunner Library

Ellis Williams Architects is working alongside Cheshire West & Chester Council on the restoration and revitalisation of Northwich’s Grade II-listed Brunner Library. The landmark building is now set for a new chapter with proposals that balance heritage conservation with modern functionality.

Date

The plans breathe new life into the historic landmark including a comprehensive refurbishment of both the building’s interior and exterior. A key focus is the 1970s rear extension, which will be transformed into a multi-use space with a new entrance, ensuring accessibility even when the main library is closed. Designed to preserve the building’s rich history while enhancing its usability, the scheme presents an opportunity to restore architectural features, improve energy efficiency, and rework the internal spaces to align with the needs of a contemporary library.

Ellis Williams is joined by an expert professional team including Clancy, Curtins, KOK, Hepworth Acoustics, Jensen Hughes, and Hannah Wehbeh Interior Design. Together, we aim to deliver a sensitive yet forward-thinking renovation that retains the library’s character while optimising functionality.

Public engagement remains central to the project, with conversations taking place earlier this year at the Weaver Museum. Feedback from residents and stakeholders continues to inform design choices, ensuring the upgraded library serves as a valuable community asset.

The plans can now be viewed on the Cheshire West & Chester planning portal under reference 25/00846/FUL.
Ellis Williams is excited to play a role in shaping the future of this treasured space, bringing new possibilities to a building that has served generations since its opening in 1909. Stay tuned for further updates as we move forward with this transformation.
