A part of local life since 1977, the multi‑million‑pound refurbishment has carefully modernised the spaces people know and love. The result is a centre designed to inspire and empower people to move more and enjoy experiences that help communities thrive.
Working in close collaboration with Cheshire West & Chester Council, Brio Leisure and the wider project team we led the design of this complex multi-million pound phased refurbishment that has succeeded in modernising Brio Northgate while retaining the character of this cherished venue.
The project focused on retaining and reworking Brio Northgate, rather than replacing the existing building. Cutting material waste and delivering a more sustainable approach to the redevelopment and conserving Northgate’s identity within Chester.
The refurbishment has delivered a comprehensive upgrade of Brio Northgate’s facilities, key features include:
- Fully refurbished gym, increasing capacity, new state-of-the-art equipment, flooring and advanced cooling system
- Reimagined pool areas with improved lighting and acoustics, boasting a new flume and interactive water play equipment for children and families
- Brand new sauna and steam room facilities
- Modern fitness and spin studio
- Improved changing villages and amenities
- Overall improved accessibility, including pool lifts and streamlined circulation through the building
- Upgraded outdoor spaces with improved signage and wayfinding, accessibility and parking provisions
Brio Northgate has been refurbished with sustainability at the core of the brief. The usage of LED lighting throughout the refurbishment, upgrades to pool filtration and circulation systems coupled with solar panel integration will help to future proof Northgate and support wider sustainability ambitions while reducing operational costs.
Delivered by Read Construction careful phasing was required to manage the complexity of the refurbishment and allow Northgate to remain partially operational for much for the construction programme.
