Steel Signing Marks Major Milestone for St Thomas’ C.E. Primary School, Leigh

Celebrating a key construction milestone at St Thomas’ C.E. Primary School in Leigh, as staff, pupils and project partners came together for a ceremonial steel signing to mark the progress of the new school building.

Date

St Thomas’ Primary School was originally earmarked for redevelopment under the Department for Education (DfE) Schools Rebuilding Programme in 2021, identified as one of the first 50 schools nationwide in need of investment due to its poor condition and lack of energy efficiency. The existing school is currently split across four separate blocks. Our design brings these together into a single, cohesive low‑carbon educational facility that supports modern teaching, improved accessibility and long‑term sustainability.

The new building, part single‑storey and part two‑storey, will accommodate up to 420 pupils aged four to eleven. Facilities include two reception classrooms, four early years classrooms, eight junior classrooms and two SEND classrooms. A Main Hall, practical classroom, studio hall, dining room and library complete the internal provision. Outdoor facilities including the sports pitch, netball court and multi‑use games area are retained on the northern aspect of the site. A bio‑solar roof and other sustainable interventions ensure the school is net‑zero ready.

The steel signing marks an exciting step forward in delivering a high quality, future focused school building for the Leigh community.

Speaking at the event, Kabir Salihi, Regional Director – North West at Tilbury Douglas, commented

For the pupils and staff of St Thomas C.E. Primary School, signing the steelwork is a moment that will become part of the fabric of their new school. It’s a small but meaningful way to connect the school community with their new building as it takes shape. Tilbury Douglas is proud to be delivering a sustainable, future‑ready school with the Department for Education that will provide a legacy for pupils, staff, and families in Leigh.
