A project for the London Borough of Lambeth, Park Campus provides specialist teaching provision for three different student groups, each with their own specific set of needs. The principal group is the Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) of 80 11-16 year old students. The second group is the Behavioural Improvement Program (BIP) consisting of 30 students who are on the campus for a short-term basis. The third is the Behaviour Educations Support Team (BEST) that serves as a drop in centre for senior students, parents and the wider community.
This was the first PRU to open as part of the national Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, therefore the brief was developed from first principles in close collaboration with the School’s Senior Leadership Team, School Staff and Pupils, Lambeth Children and Young Peoples Service, LA Planning Department, Local residents, Ward councillors, Community Leaders, Partnerships for Schools, CABE, Sport England, Football Association (included grant funding) and the Metropolitan Police.
The project has won design awards from Partnership for Schools (PfS) and from the British Council for School Environments (BCSE), and the project has been published as a case study by PfS.
