The overall scheme (for approximately 300 pupils) was broken down into three phases; Post-16, Main Building and Integrated Services Building. A steering group was formed for each phase, comprising designers, contractors, project manager, client and end users, to ensure ongoing communication, collaboration and cooperation.

The Post-16 phase involved extensions and remodelling to an existing single storey building to improve access, circulation and teaching spaces and bring the original building in line with current specifications and standards. Facilities include a variety of teaching spaces, break out spaces, medical rooms, hygiene rooms and a sensory room.

The main building (Fox Wood and Green Lane Schools) has 3,300m2 of remodelled and refurbished floor area and 1,900m2 of new build extensions, including a new specialist teaching wing and a hydrotherapy pool adjacent to the original sports hall.

The JM building was added into the scheme to convert the original Science and Technology building for Local Authority, Health and partner services support and administration facilities.

Ellis Williams were instrumental in taking the clients brief and developing a design that delivered on the specialist needs of the end users. Their ability to communicate freely with a user group at all levels and to deliver options for discussion was key to developing the proposals quickly, leading to a reduced delivery programme. In addition, their knowledge and understanding of designing for special needs contributed enormously to the success of the project.

As teaching staff and governors, we felt our ideas and views were listened to and acted upon, and we felt an integral part of the project at all times throughout the planning and building process, rather than just the end users.
